Scholarship Selection Process
Candidates for Snow Scholarships compete for awards by completing an extensive application and review process. The Scholarship Fund advertises the availability of awards through a variety of media. First, we visit high schools to give workshops on what scholarships are available to students attending that particular high school, how to best complete the application and answer any questions relating to the application. We submit press releases to local media announcing the availability of our scholarships and promote each scholarship with high school scholarship coordinators.
Applications become available on November 1st each year and must be post marked or delivered to our office by February 1st the following year. At that time applications are processed and copied for delivery to the appropriate selection committee member.
The George Snow Scholarship Fund has a selection committees to review applications. Scholarship Selection committees are comprised of educatiors, business men and women as well as individuals who are considered experts in certain areas. We strive for a gender-balanced committee. Most committee members have served many, many years now and have a great deal of experience in our process. All share a passion for helping others.
Each selection committee member reviews all the applications assigned to them and ranks each candidate in the appropriate areas. These rankings are then submitted to our office where they are entered into a program that compiles the rankings and allows us to insure that no applicant is being rejected or included because of one bad or good ranking. Candidates are then ranked and from that scoring and they are then rejected or asked to interview.
Students who are asked to interview are then contacted by email, phone and regular mail to schedule an interview with our interview committee. Interviews are then conducted with the selection committees dividing themselves into teams of two. Each team interviews all candidates assigned to their team and grades them according to the results of their interview.
During this process a separate team is gathering information such as high school transcripts, student aid reports, and family tax returns that are used to substantiate information provided on the candidates application. From here a Financial Need Analysis is preformed.
We then take our selection committee grades and merge them with the established financial need, and starting at the top we work down assign scholarship based on need and who best meets the established criteria.
